About

First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, NY

Our Mission

First Presbyterian Church actively exists as the living body of Christ, committed to growing in faithfulness to God, serving the whole human family and welcoming all people into God’s love.

Our History

Celebrating over 200 years of continuous Christian Service.

A small group of pioneers, mostly from Scotland, first worshipped in a barn situated on the flats along the Delaware River below the village of Delhi. In 1811 a church was built, but by 1880 a larger building was needed to accommodate the growing congregation. In 1882 a new Church, built by well regarded architect Isaac Perry, was dedicated on Clinton Street in the village of Delhi. The exterior of the beautiful Church measured 85 feet by 59 feet with seating for 425 people.

The faithful congregation continued to grow and in 1909 a chapel was added to the building. The “baby boom” era called for more Sunday School rooms and in the early 1950’s, the basement was remodeled to accommodate the children and a dining room, kitchen and social room. Office space and a Christian Education wing were added to the back of the Church in 1992.

For over 200 years as “God’s people,” the congregation has constantly paused to look back in order to look forward with confidence and hope. They have repeated the ancient believer’s word, “Thus far hath the God helped me.”
We give thanks for God’s steadfast love and faithfulness and for the devotion of all who have served this congregation, this community and the world in the name of Jesus Christ.
